The latest book that has blown me away is Shaykh Sa’id ‘Abd al-‘Adhim’s amazing compilation: ‘al-Atqiya’ al-Akhfiya’. I was casually reading through some of its chapters this evening when I came across some quotes which I thought to share (now and in the near future insha’Allah). Below are a couple of quotes from two great personalities in our history:
The advice of Ja’far ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Ali (rahimahullah) to his son:
“O my son, accept my advice and commit my statement to memory, for if you do so, you shall live in happiness and die in a praiseworthy state. O my son, whoever is content with what Allah has portioned out for him, will be rich, and whoever looks to what lies in the hands of others, will die impoverished, and whoever is not pleased with what Allah has portioned out for him, ends up accusing Allah, the most High, in His Decree. Whoever belittles his errors ends up amplifying the errors of people and whoever belittles the errors of others ends up amplifying his own errors. O my son, whoever exposes others, the private affairs of his home will be exposed, whoever unsheathes the sword of transgression ends up being killed by it, and whoever digs a hole for another, ends up falling into it himself. Whoever mixes with fools will be humiliated and whoever mixes with the learned will be revered, and whoever enters the places of evil ends up being accused (of evil). O my son, say the truth regardless of whether it is for you or against you, and beware of slander for it plants rancour in the hearts of men. O my son, if you wish for generosity, then you must adhere to its sources.”
It is reported that a fly once landed on Al-Mansur (the Ruler) so he swiped at it. It came back to him and he swiped at it again, until it exasperated him. Ja’far came in and al-Mansur said to him, “O Abu ‘Abdillah! Why did Allah create the fly?!” He replied, “To exasperate the oppressors.”
And these are two thought-provoking quotes from Abu Hazim (Salamah ibn Dinar, rahimahullah):
“I have found the world to be of two portions: a portion that is for me, so I will not rush to it before its time even if I am able to seek it with the power of the heavens and the earth, and a portion that is for others, so I did not attain it in what has gone by nor do I hope for it in what’s to come. The people are prevented from what is destined for me just as I am prevented from what is destined for others, so which of these two matters will I waste my life over?! I have found what I have been given in this world to be of two: one, the end of which will arrive before my end so I gain it, and one in which my end will arrive before its end so I die (before attaining it) and thus I leave it as inheritance it to those after me. So in which of these two matters will I disobey my Lord in?!“
He also once said, “If you guarantee me two things, I guarantee you Paradise. Act upon that which you hate if the Pleasure of Allah lies within it, and abandon that which you love if the Wrath of Allah lies within it.”
Do you translate these?
Yeah, they’re original translations.
Masha’Allah. I think I may have posted some of your translations then but don’t remember where. Should I next time, link back to this site or not?
PS – Are you open to suggestions as to which quotations from which books to translate next….?
No that’s fine, you can just state the source/blog address.
To be honest, I never really read something in order to translate it, I just end up translating whatever beneficial readings I happen to come across. So although I’ll be happy to take on suggestions, it would feel a bit outside of the usual routine! But do feel free insha’Allah.
Masha’Allah. Not a problem. How often do you post new materials?
I was just aiming at few topics, such as the ‘ulama’s travelling for ‘ilm in the past and other topics.
