Al-Kirizi (a poet) once said:
‘And do not walk upon the earth except in humbleness,
For how many people underneath it are more exalted than you!
If you are in glory, goodness and strength,
Then how many have died that were more stronger than you.’
Two beautiful statements:
‘Umar ibn al-Khattab said:
‘If a man humbles himself to Allah, then Allah will raise him and say to him, ‘Rise up, may Allah raise you!’ because he sees himself to be insignificant whilst he is great in the eyes of people. But if a slave is arrogant and transgresses, then Allah casts him away saying, ‘Be lowly, may Allah lower you!’ because he sees himself to be great whilst he is insignificant in the eyes of people.’
And Abu Hatim (Ibn Hibban) said:
‘The most virtuous person is the one who is humble despite being of high rank, who is ascetic despite having the capabilities and who forgives despite having power. A person doesn’t abandon humbleness except that he is at the door of arrogance and a person is never arrogant towards others except that he is someone who’s become amazed at his own self. I have never seen anybody prove arrogant over others except that Allah punishes him by subjecting him to humiliation under those who are above him.’
– Rawdhat al-‘Uqala
May Allah grant us all humbleness from Him which only raises us in rank, and may He give us the tawfiq (guidance) to react well and in good manner when others act arrogantly towards us. Ameen

Mashaa’Allah, your posts continue to inspire me.
jazaaki Allahu khayran, here is another quote i read recently:
Dear brother! Throw away the garb of superiority for it is not yours. It is your Creator’s. Adorn yourself with the garb of humbleness, for no man has a little amount of arrogance in his heart except that his sense of reasoning diminishes in proportion to his arrogance.

Nice quote Amatullah, barakallahu fiki. 🙂
Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh,
What is there for us to be proud about anyway. Everything belongs to Allaah and He can take it away any moment He wants.
Jazaaki Allaah khayr
🙂 I never understood why anyone is arrogant,as I said before they can not even control how much oxygen comes in and out of each breath!
Asalam alaikum waramatulahi wabarakat 🙂
I hope to Allah you are well.
SubhanAllah, may Allah make us humble Ameen ! I think the way to achieve that, is to constantly look at those who are far far better than us in deeds and not those who do not even pray or fast. Not that we are better than them either.
& to remember how we were once upon time and yet Allah had mercy on us by showing us the right path !
Jazakillahukhayrn
Assalamoalaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatohu
ya ukhti jazaki Allah khairen toooo much for all these wonderful reminders. i feel so very blessed by Ar Rahman that we have access to these amazing thoughts of the scholars of the past. May Allah SWT fill your life and akhirah with His Nur.
Alhamdulillah we just covered arrogance in our halaqa group; arrogance is a sin of the heart therefore hidden and therefore very hard to recognise and therefore very very very hard to control. Remember also you need only an atoms weight to get you into trouble. there are two aspects of arrogance as per the hadith of Rasulillah SAW: 1) batra al Haq & 2) ghamt an Naas. The nuances for both are minute and endless and believe me, amazingly hard to discover in oneself.
One will accept religious advice from all the “recognised” channels; but if one is advised by a person whom they see as an “inferior” (e.g, someone not praying, not doing hijaab; etc etc) they will turn away. This is batra al Haq, subhannAllah. Allah SWT guides, by His Mercy, even by the evil living person, and this is only a sign of His Majesty and our tininess.
Again, one will endeavour night and day to remove all sign of any type of judgementalism and snobbery; yet subhanAllah at the most unexpected moment, there it is: one little movement of your heart about the most unimagined person and there you have ghamt an Naas: you think for whatever reason you are better than the person in front of you. And only if Allah SWT Al Alim Al Hakim has mercy on you, you will be allowed to recognise it for what it is so that you can, with His Help repent and remove it.
Ameen
