قال الإمام أحمد بن الحنبل رحمه الله
القرآن كلام الله منه بدأ و إليه يعود
Imaam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (rahimahullaah) said:
“The Qur’aan is the Word of Allaah. From Him it came and to Him it will return.”

لا خير في قول لا يراد به وجه الله
و لا في مال لا ينفق منه في سبيل الله
و لا فيمن يغلب جهله حلمه
ولا فيمن يخاف في الله لومة لائم
Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq (radiallaahu `anhu) said:
“There is no good in speech whereby the Face of Allaah is not intended
Or in wealth from which is not spent in the Way of Allaah
Or in a person whose ignorance overcomes his forbearance
Or in a person who fears the blame of the blamers, in the way of Allaah”

الخوف من الجليل
و العمل بالتنزيل
و الرضاء بالقليل
و الاستعداد إلى يوم الرحيل
Ali ibn Abee Taalib (radiallaahu `anhu) said that Taqwa is:
“Fear from Allaah the Majestic
Doing deeds according to the Revelation
Being pleased with little
And preperation for the Day of Departure

و الله ما تكلمت بكلمة منذ أربعين سنة إلا و أعددت لها جواباً بين يدى الله
And one of the Salaf as-Saalih used to say:
“By Allaah I have not spoken a word for 40 years except that I have prepared an answer for it in front of Allaah”

That quote really amazed me subhan’Allaah, – it’s reported in ‘Uluww al-Himmah, btw, and it says that it’s the statement of ‘Imaad al-Hanbali (recorded in Shadhrat adh-Dhahab).
What struck me about it was the fact that he said it with certainty and not in boast as some may think subhan’Allaah. We have other statements from the Tabi’een who used to say about the likes of Sufyaan ath-Thawri for example, that ‘wallaahi if he was told he was going to die tomorrow, there’d be nothing for him to increase in’ (i.e. he’s already doing so much good)…
May Allaah make us of their calibre and quality. Ameen

Jazaakillaahu khairan for the reference. I was trying to find its source and some say it’s a statement of Ibn Daqeeq al-‘Eed…though I wasn’t really able to confirm it. Some say that Ibn Daqeeq al-‘Eed said something to the effect of: There’s nothing I have said or done except that I have prepared an answer for it in front of Allaah.
If I find anything, in shaa’ Allaah I’ll share.

Yes, some attribute the statement (including ‘or done’) to Ibn Daqeeq also but I only found it attributed to ‘Imaad al-Hanbali.
However I think the case is like the one I mentioned above with Sufyaan al-Thawri, a statement may be very common and used/said by more than one person at several occasions, e.g. “By Allaah were I told I’ll die tomorrow, I could not increase in anything…(or to that effect)” – this is something I’ve read many of the past predecessors said or have had said about them, wallaahu a’lam 🙂
