Finally, after so many months 🙂 …

The Life of ‘Abdullah Ibn al-Mubarak
The Scholar of the East and the Scholar of the West
Based on the Arabic book, ‘Al-Imam al-Qudwah’ by Muhammad ‘Uthman Jamal
Book has been taken down for editing and publishing

“The lands of Khurasan have not brought out anyone like Ibn al-Mubarak.”
– Imam Ahmad
‘… The pages of our Islamic history and heritage are filled with the lives of men and women whose influence on our history can only be retold by history itself. They served as beacons of light, illuminating the path set by this Ummah’s Messenger (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam), and yet they were the heroes who protected this very path.
From amongst such figures are those who excelled in certain fields be they in leadership, scholarship, political thought, arts of war, business or literature to name but a few. However, rarely has history in the post-Prophethood era witnessed personalities who had gathered all these characteristics and succeeded across numerous fields and avenues. Rarely has it witnessed lives that were so enriched and yet enriching, so influential and inspiring, so powerful and empowering, so humble and yet so humbling.
One of these rarities lies in the very being of that scholar from Khurasan, the Mujahid between the army ranks, the faqeeh (jurist) and muhaddith (narrator) of his time, the righteous ‘aabid (worshipper) of his Lord, the successful merchant across cities, the well-known zahid (ascetic), the poet and writer, the grammarian and linguist, the respected and the leader of the Pious – ‘Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak…’
But who was Ibn al-Mubarak?
‘I looked to the Sahabah and I looked to ‘Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak, but I didn’t see a virtue for them over him, except in their companionship of the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) and their battles with him.’
– Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah
‘There was no-one at the time of Ibn al-Mubarak who sought knowledge more than he did. He travelled to Yemen, Egypt, al-Sham, Basra and Kufa. He was from the narrators of knowledge and he was well-deserving of that; he wrote from the young and old, he wrote from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi and he wrote from al-Fizari… he has indeed gathered a great matter.’
– Imam Ahmad
‘He had gathered characteristics which were never before gathered in any scholar in his time in the entire world.’
– Ibn Hibban
‘He was the pride of the Mujahidin, the leader of the brave…’
– Imam al-Dhahabi
JazaakAllaah Khair, we added it to our blog
May Allah Ta’ala abundantly reward the ones responsible for publishing this work in the English language. I’d been waiting to read this for a very long time.
When I try to open it, it says the file is broken ?
Mashallah, great work
jazakallah khayr
mashaAllah this is terrific Fajr! Baarak Allahu feeki, may Allah accept it from you and from those who assisted you and may He make it a sadaqah jaariyah for all of you. Ameen.
The cover is very nice too mashaAllah. Are you planning on getting it published? 🙂
Ameen, wa iyyakum.
UmmNusayba, it should download fine. This is the direct link,
http://fajr.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/biography-abdullah-ibn-al-mubarak.pdf
– Try right-clicking on it and then selecting ‘Save Target As…’ Otherwise, just click the link and when the pdf opens up, go to the top right icon (pic of a disk) and save it that way.
Amatullah, yeah it’d be nice to publish it, but I don’t have a clue how to go about that. Hmm, maybe in the near future insha’Allah.
I LOVE ‘Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak! Thank you so much for this! May Allah reward you abundantly!
Jazakumullah khair for this – SO greatly needed and so many fawaa’id in his example (may Allah have mercy upon him).
Very easy to read, brings out all the emotion mashaAllah.
Again, May Allah reward you abundantly.
Wassalamu alaikum.
Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatu Allaahi wa barakaatuh,
This is a great piece of work that you have been guided to translate. Jazaaki Allahu khayr.
May Allaah grant us some of the characteristics that Ibn Al Mubaarak had. Ameen.
What an excellent month to complete it in as well. Ma sha Allaah.
Wa `alaykumusalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh
Just a note that this isn’t a translation of any book, but just a humble effort to put something together on the life of the Imam. The above-mentioned source book was used as a guide for this compilation.
In that case Jazaaki Allaahu khayran katheera and may Allaah enable us to benefit much from te last 7 days of Ramadaan. Ameen.
I came across your book. Just finished reading it. It seems lot of effort went into it.
I got stuck at one of points though. How can one have wuduu for 45 years. I have come across this in other places too but can’t find it be humanly possible. Did Abu Hanifa didn’t eat/drink for 45 years. Is it just figure of speech. Can you possibly shed some light.
The book was well written and well translated. Jazakumullah kharian for this.
I understand it to mean that Abu Hanifah regularly prayed throughout the night such that he prayed Salat al-Fajr with the same wudhu he did for Salat al-‘Isha (in effect creating a unbroken link between the days). In other words, he didn’t usually sleep between that time.
Of course, it would be impossible to keep the same wudhu for 45 years straight, but I believe it’s just highlighting the fact that he didn’t need to make ablution for Salat al-Fajr like most people would. Wallahu a’lam!
walekum salaam wa rahmatuallahi wa barakatuhu ukhti
JazakAllahukhair for translating.
was’salaam.
i mean JazakAllahu khair for translating whoever translated it.
JazakAllahu khair ukhti for uploading it
JazakAllahukhair to all those involved it.
was’salaam.
assalamualykum,
Jazakillahu khairaan kaseera..Excellent job .May Allah accept this service of yours.
Assalaamualaykum ukhti,
I’ve been trying to find out (with no success) when the sisters circle at Tayyibun (i.e. every Sunday between 12pm – 2pm) will start, any idea? Maybe this Sunday?
JazakAllahkheir and keep up the good work.
Your sister,
UmIbrahim
One more thing sister.
I studied Arabic at a boarding Institute in Wales called European Institute of Human Sciences (EIHS).
They only teach in Arabic, so for those brothers and sisters who want to study Shari’ah ONLY in Arabic without having to leave the UK, then this might be a good place.
They currently have 20 scholarship places available for free (worth £4500 each – includes rent, food, tuition fees).
Maybe, if you find this of interest, you can put a post up?
JazakAllahkheiran.
UmIbrahim
p.s. please let me know about the halaqat by al mu’minat.
your blog is great!
Wa `alaykumusalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh
Sorry, I missed your comment sis. The circles should be up and running now, but I’m not in the area, so you might want to contact Tayyibun directly and ask insha’Allah. Try their email: info@tayyibun.com or call them on 07949713902
With regards to the scholarships for EIHS, yes please email me the details: fajr.wordpress @gmail.com – would love to have a look at it, jazakillahu khayran 🙂

Do let us know when you’ve created the page (and link us back here insha’Allah), it would be a great service to others.
Wa billahi-tawfiq.
assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,
beautiful blog and barakaAllahu feeki wa ahsanaAllahu ilayki ukhtil habiba for this compilation of Ibn al Mubaarak’s seerah.
Also, is there any way you can direct me to the original arabic of the book inshaAllah that would be beneficial for me.
Wa `alaykumusalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh
Wa fiki barak’Allah sis. No, I haven’t come across the source book online, but if you wish to search around, then these are its details:
عبدالله بن المبارك الإمام القدوة ، لمحمد عثمان جمال ، أعلام المسلمين : 1 ، دار القلم ، بيروت ، ط 1419هــ 1997م
It’s the first book in the A’lam series by the author.
asalamu alaikum,
sister i have a request: could you do similar type of biographies of the other major people in Islam, especially the likes of the first three generations, the muhadithoon and the fuqaha.
Jazakallah khayr 😀
Please add a link to this book to the translated books section. It’ll be easier to find in-sha Allah.
