“Don’t worship Allah so He may give you. Rather, worship Him so He may be pleased. For when He is pleased, He will astonish you with His Gifts.”
By the dawn
And the ten nights
And the even and the odd
O you tranquil soul!
Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing
[al-Fajr: 1-3; 27-28]

Loftiness is attained in accordance to one’s struggles,
And whoever seeks nobility, remains vigilant by night.
Whoever wishes to achieve without due effort,
Will waste their life seeking what’s impossible.
You search for glory and yet you sleep at night,
It’s only the seeker of pearls who dives deep into the sea.
– Imam al-Shafi’i, al-Diwan

Mind Over Matter?

Hisham al-Kalbi:
“I memorised what no-one has memorised and I forgot what no-one has forgotten.
I had an uncle who used to admonish me with regards to memorisation of the Qur’aan. So I entered the house and made an oath to never come out until I memorised the Qur’aan. So I memorised it in 3 days…
And one day I looked into the mirror to cut what was below a fistful (of my beard) but I cut what was above the fistful!”
– ‘Uluww al-Himmah
Sometimes, we become too busy trying to remember a particular task or memorise a particular text so much so, that we forget something that’s right in front of us! 🙂
