“Many from amongst the Salaf disliked for du’a to be requested of them; and they used to say to the person requesting du’a, “And who am I?””*
– Sh. Sa’id ‘Abd al-‘Adhim [al-Atqiya’ al-Akhfiya’]
* i.e. meaning: ‘who am I that my du’a will be responded to’ etc.
It’s very easy and at times habitual for us to say to another person ‘Pray for me’ or ‘Make du’a that Allah grants me such and such.’ Although there’s no problem in doing this, we often forget that Allah sometimes places us in situations so that we can call upon Him ourselves and worship Him on a deeper level. He wants to hear our du’as, He wants to respond to our call.
The person who is being tested and who is in dire need, is the best person to make du’a. Never forget: You are the best person to make du’a for yourself. You know your circumstance, and you know your suffering better than the person you’re asking. You can articulate it better and you can put much emotion and sincerity behind it. Allah is ready to respond to the one in need because He said:
“Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil and makes you inheritors of the earth? Is there a deity with Allah? Little do you remember.” [al-Naml: 62]
Indeed, little do we remember… May Allah make our tongues moist with His Remembrance, ameen.
Wa aleykum Salam so true subhanallah I have seen this myself when you really ask Allah sincerely he answers your dua and it’s the beast feeling and subhanallah that ayah you quoted is so special to me. Just little correction it’s in Surah Naml above Qassas. Jazakallah for sharing it’s reminder for me to be grateful Alhamdullillahh!!!
The quoted ayah is in Sura Naml number 62 , and not in Sura Qasas .
Corrected, jazakumallahu khayran!
Fajr you are sooo amazing <3
I have always felt this but could never really express it the way you have expressed
love you fillah jazak Allah khair!
What section of al-Atqiya’ al-Akhfiya’ is the saying from? I would love to read the Arabic and share it with friends.
Thank you!
Shamsiya, ahabbakillahu al-ladhi ahbabtini fih 🙂
Iqra, you can find it in the last two lines of page 78. You’re welcome.
Thank you Fajr. It appears as though yo have a different edition. I was able to match up the pages last time but now I still cannot find the saying. I’m terribly sorry to bother – can I trouble you to reference the page below or give me a chapter heading?

No worries, Iqra. I actually used this to locate the page for you, and it’s still the same page (78). It’s a half-page text with the last line ending with: “أي شيء أنا؟”. Can you see it?
Thank you very much.
I appreciate how accessible you are. May God reward you in the Hereafter.
Amen.
