Beware of the love of people
“Be silent in that era as it moves along
And regarding the mortals, flee from their monastery
And wash your hands from the occasion and its people
And be cautious of their love whereby you reach their goodness
I explored but did not find a companion
To befriend through life and befriend no-one but he
So I abandoned the lowest of them due to the excess of his evil
And I abandoned the loftiest of them due the shortage of his goodness.”

Oppressor of his own self
Ash-Shaafi’ee (rahimahullaah) said:
“The one who oppresses himself the most is:
The one who humbles himself for one who does not honour him
And strives in the friendship of one who does not benefit him
And accepts praise from one who does not know him”

Companion of desires
“If I saw a companion of his own desires even walk on water, I would not accept him.”

With the people of obedience
“There is no-one except that he has a lover and a hater. So if that must be the case, then let a person be with the people of obedience to Allaah, ‘azza wa jall.”
Masha Allah! Real gems.
Can you please le tus know which book are these quotes from?
May Allah reward you for this!
Wa iyyaakum
The 1st quote was from the Diwaan of Imam ash-Shaafi’ee and the rest are from a collection I have which includes his quotes and some of this poetry from the Diwaan also.
Please see this post http://fajr.wordpress.com/2006/07/11/project-1-mawaaidh-ash-shaafiee/ [Project 1] where I’ve explained what I’ve done.
Jazaak’Allaahu khayran
Jazak Allahu Khayr for the post
Jazaakillahu Khayran sister for this site. Really good Mashallah. I was wondering if you had the Arabic for the famous quote of Imam Shafi’i beginning, “All humans are dead except those who have knowledge.”
Also, I think it might be bad news, the quote in your banner is actually from verse 18 of Surat al Thariyaat. Not sure if it’s been pointed out before.
Wa iyyaakumaa
Imran, unfortunately I don’t currently have the full quote in Arabic – & I couldnt find it in the Mawaa’idh collection – but if I come across it then Inshaa’Allah I’ll post it up.
Jazaak’Allaahu khayran for the correction on the ayah reference. It has been corrected alhamdulillaah.
